The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (Leibniz-HKI, investigates the pathobiology of human-pathogenic fungi and identifies targets for the development of novel natural product-based antibiotics. The department Biomolecular Chemistry invites talented and highly gifted candidates to apply as a

Head of MS and NMR Core Facility (f/div/m)

Research Area:

Natural products represent an eminent source of therapeutics, in particular for antibiotics and antiproliferative agents, many of which are in clinical use.  Furthermore, specialized metabolites play key roles in microbial interactions, e. g. as pathogenicity factors. Using modern analytical methods, we detect and monitor natural products from bacteria and fungi, and elucidate previously unknown chemical structures.

Candidate's profile:

  • University degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a related discipline, and PhD in life sciences

  • Excellent knowledge and professional experience in the field of liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and NMR spectroscopy

  • Profound expertise in small molecule analysis as well as in data processing

  • Hands-on experience with service routines and maintenance of the facility instruments

  • Capability to work both independently and in teams

  • Teaching and mentoring skills

  • Excellent communication skills in English

Main responsibilities:

  • Manage the workflows of the analytical units, perform the basic service and maintain instruments

  • Advise clients on technical aspects, including project design, sample preparation, statistical processing and structural interpretation

  • Run and analyze samples in collaboration with other departments and groups of the institute

  • Monitor new hardware and software technologies

  • Develop new methods and techniques for small molecule analysis

We offer:

  • The successful candidate will be hosted in the department Biomolecular Chemistry (Head: Prof. Dr. Christian Hertweck), equipped with excellent technical facilities

  • She/he will be involved into multifaceted, interdisciplinary scientific projects at the interface of Chemistry and Biology

  • An outstanding scientific environment on the Beutenberg Campus, providing state-of-the-art research facilities and a highly integrative network of life science groups

  • Postdoctoral researchers are granted the access to professional skills training at the Graduate Academy of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees)

As an equal opportunity employer, the Leibniz-HKI is committed to increase the percentage of female scientists and therefore especially encourages them to apply.
