In a joint appointment with the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (Leibniz-HKI), the Faculty of Biological Sciences of Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany is seeking to fill a
W3 Professorship for Deep Microbiome Metabolomics
by the next possible date.
We are looking for a research personality (f/m/d) with comprehensive expertise in microbiome research and metabolomics as well as data analysis and modelling who will significantly shape the further development of the scientific profile in Jena. The professorship Deep Microbiome Metabolomics is intended to open up a new field of research that investigates the influence of the (gut) microbiome on the metabolome during drug treatments, considering also potential effects on the success of the therapy.
The post holder is expected to develop and execute an ambitious research program in the field of the metabolization of drugs and drug candidates by the human microbiome. This will involve the use of emerging technologies such as biotechnology of complex microbial consortia, metabolome analyses, artificial intelligence for quantitative characterization of large data sets using deep learning techniques, and germ-free animal models.
The professor should have the ability to provide dedicated leadership to the department, which will be established at the Leibniz-HKI. This includes training of early career scientists, as well as maintaining an extensive network of international collaborators. The professorship is responsible for the further conception of research of the new department as well as for the integration of research and teaching into the Leibniz-HKI and the research landscape in Jena, for example into the Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse and the Leibniz Center for Photonics in Infection Research. It is explicitly desired that the new professor is very committed to the acquisition of external funding. The professor will participate in teaching in the field of microbiology and related subjects. The professorship is a research professorship with a reduced teaching load.
Jena is scientifically very strong and internationally visible in the areas of microbiology, chemical biology, infection biology, biogeosciences, biodiversity, optics/photonics, materials science and bioinformatics/systems biology. The city has an attractive research environment with an integrative network of natural and life sciences research groups, characterized by close collaborations of the university with non-university research institutions and with local biotech companies. The professorship is expected to actively shape the research profile and to expand and intensify the collaborations.
