The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (Leibniz-HKI, www.leibniz-hki.de) investigates the pathobiology of human-pathogenic fungi and identifies targets for the development of novel natural product-based antibiotics. The research group Systems Biology and Bioinformatics invites talented and highly gifted candidates to apply as

Software Engineer (f/div/m)

The research group Systems Biology and Bioinformatics (SBI) are seeking a highly skilled software engineer with a keen eye and interest on solving exciting life science problems. Given the high demand in big data analysis application in the life sciences, our demands for hardware and software solution towards efficient high performance computation increased accordingly. We recently achieved funding for a significant update of our computer hardware. On top, we reach out to the community whenever possible and encapsulate our services into pipelines and web applications. These require constant monitoring and maintenance. To ensure the fulfillment of our goals we welcome applications of software and IT specialists with the following expertise.

Expertise required:

  • Accessing servers and developing/maintaining analysis pipelines via bash and docker are a must

  • Proficiency in Python and/or R for pipeline and web application development as well as big data analysis

  • Interest in life science data science including gene expression and microbiome data analysis is a plus

  • Knowledge in statistical methods in the context of biological systems is a plus

Task to be fulfilled:

In collaboration with our team, the tasks to be addressed by the Software Engineer comprise:

  • Web app development and maintenance

  • Curation of pipelines dedicated to efficient high-throughput data preprocessing and analysis

  • Cluster management / server administration

  • Distributed computing / software scaling towards grid engines

  • Monitoring / work load surveillance of our HPCs

We offer:

  • The successful candidate will be hosted in the research group Systems Biology and Bioinformatics of Prof. Dr. Gianni Panagiotou of the Leibniz-HKI in an international, dynamic team, with access to state-of-the-art computational resources.

  • SBI is currently coordinating, the BMBF funded consortium PERMICCION and is an active participant of the Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse” (www.microverse-cluster.de) and the CRC/Transregio 124 “Pathogenic fungi and their human host: Networks of interaction” (www.funginet.de) funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

  • We offer an international and multi-disciplinary environment with a strong expertise in the proposed research field. Currently the group consists of approximately 15 members at different levels of seniority.

Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees). As an equal opportunity employer, the Leibniz-HKI is committed to increasing the percentage of female scientists and therefore especially encourages them to apply.
